LSU softball had a successful early signing day as head coach Beth Torina announced the addition of seven signees for the 2019 class. All seven will be eligible for the 2020 season.

The Tigers signed Ciara Briggs, Victoria Abrams, Cait Calland, Taylor Edwards, Taylor Pleasants, Anna Jones and Raeleen Gutierrez.

Briggs joins the Tigers coming from Yorba Linda, California. She joins the team as an outfielder. The four-time letterwinner led her team at Orange Lutheran High School to three straight Top 5 finishes in the California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section.  Freshman year her team was ranked sixth in the nation.

In three seasons, Briggs has been part of 84 wins. She hit .490 last season. She scored 45 runs, 48 hits, 30 RBI, 12 doubles, four triples and eight home runs. Briggs is a three-time First Team All-County selection, a First Team All-American, FloSoftball and Maz Preps, a three-time First Team All-Trinity league selection and received First Team D1 CIFSS honors, as well as team MVP honors.

Abrams is a utility player coming from Columbia, Louisiana. She led her team at Caldwell Parish High School to a Class 3A State Championship in 2017. The four-year letterwinner was named First Team All District as a junior. The same year she was named 3A All-State and and the Class 3A State Championship MVP.

In Abrams’ junior season she also hit .535 with 42 runs scored. She put up 61 total hits, 17 doubles, five triples and 10 home runs. Her slugging percentage stood at 1.008 and she stole 24 bases. Her stats continue to pile up pitching 96 innings with 128 strikeouts.

A Katy, Texas native, Calland joins as a catcher for the Tigers. Calland led her high school team to three-straight district championships. She was also a regional finalist for three consecutive years. Junior year, Calland batted .402, scoring seven home runs. She has been part of 102 victories.

Calland earned Second Team All-District honors her freshman year and First Team All-District honors her sophomore and junior years. Calland also plays for the Texas Bombers travel team.

Coming from in-state, Edwards joins the Tigers as a pitcher from Marrero. Edwards has earned all-district honors for three years straight. She led her team to the Division II State Quarterfinals twice. She is also part of the Texas Bombers organization.

Pleasants joins the team from Houston, Texas as an infielder. She has led her team to Top 5 finishes at districts three years in a row earning her First Team all-District infielder each time. Junior year she hit .589 with 45 RBI, 43 hits, 12 doubles and six home runs, as well as a .692 on-base percentage.

Jones joins the Tigers as an outfielder from Deer Park, Texas. In her junior year, Jones led her team to finish first place at districts. She played in 20 games her junior year, scoring 22 runs on 33 hits with a .623 batting average. She also got 21 RBI, seven doubles, one triple and three home runs.

Jones received First Team All-District, First Team All-State and Co-MVP due to her 661 on-base percentage and her .962 slugging percentage.

Coming from Upland, California, Gutierrez joins as a first baseman. She is a three-time second team all-league performer. Freshman year she hit .415 with 27 hits. She also scored 17 runs and nine RBI that year. She is part of the So Cal A’s travel ball team and has won the Louisville Slugger Independence Day tournament three times.

“I think there’s some opportunities for [the signees],” coach Torina said. “The biggest voids are left in the pitching staff. Those guys are gonna have to have some time there, but we’re gonna play the best nine or 10. They have the same number of swings and bats and opportunities in the next 40 days.”

"It’ll be up to them what they do with their opportunity. They’re very talented. They’re very capable. I’m very excited about the careers of all of these guys.”

Softball begins their season Feb. 7 with a home matchup against Tulsa.
